How to Care for Color-Treated Hair

Many men and women treat their hair with some sort of color. Some do so to hide a few gray hairs, others want to brighten their hair with highlights. But caring for color-treated hair is far different from normal hair. That’s because the recently-added color can fade and cause our hair to be more fragile. But by taking the right steps, you can keep your hair healthy.

Pick the right shampoo

Not all shampoos are good for color-treated hair. Some can actually cause the color to fade faster. As such, you’ll want to choose shampoos that are labeled as “color safe” and “low sulphate.” These will ensure that your color won’t be washed out too fast.

Wash your hair less frequently

Another way to protect your hair from fading is to wash it less frequently. While the color safe shampoos can help slow the fading process, it won’t eliminate it. That’s why we recommend washing your hair only three times a week at most. You can use dry shampoo if and when it is needed.

Air dry or use heat protection sprays

Colored hair is more fragile. As a result, it can be more susceptible to heat damage. Heat protection sprays can protect your hair while still allowing you to style it the way you want. However, we still recommend limiting how often you use heat to style your hair. When possible, let your hair air dry instead of using a blow-dryer.

Condition your hair

Conditioners can help your hair stay healthy and prevent it from becoming too fragile after color treatment. We recommend finding conditioners meant specifically for color treated hair, as these will hydrate your hair enough to create a protective barrier.
