How to Care for Your Hair Extensions

Choosing to invest in hair extensions is a big decision.  If you’re looking to purchase the highest quality extensions, you’re most likely going to be spending a little bit of money. So, when it’s your own hard-earned cash at stake, wouldn’t you want to do whatever you could to make sure you were getting all that it’s worth?

With this in mind, you need to do everything you can to maintain the quality of your extensions. That’s why we’ve gone through some of the best practices for taking care of your hair extensions.

Brush Gently

When we brush our hair in the morning, we often don’t pay attention to what we’re doing. However, if you took time to slow down, you would notice you’re brushing your hair too harshly. This can damage ordinary hair, but it can also damage hair extensions. As you’re brushing, do so gently using a soft-bristled brush. Start from the bottom and then work your way up to the roots, trying your best not to tug.

Wash and Moisturize

For hair extensions, we recommend getting shampoo and conditioner that is specialized for moisturizing dry or damaged hair. This ensures that your hair extensions are protected from any harsh chemicals. Wash your extensions the same way you would with your natural hair, but keep in mind then your extensions do not produce natural oils. As such, you can go up to two or three days without washing.

Don’t Overheat

You can style your hair extensions just as you would your normal hair, but do so with care.  Heated styling tools can cause damage to your extensions if they are overused. So, use them only when necessary and keep the settings on low

Avoid Chemical Processes

While you can color treat your extensions, we do not recommend doing so for a long period of time. Chemical processes can deteriorate your extensions and shorten their lifespan.
